As a future graduate of CAM Institute of Design, we know that heading out into the world of job hunting can be a daunting task. Finding an employer who shares your values and passion for design in a company that supports and nurtures your creativity might seem overwhelming, but we’ve got you covered. Here are our top five picks of design studios we think hit the mark in terms of creativity, industry standards and workplace culture in the Atlantic Canada region. While our list is by no means exhaustive or in no particular order, we thought it might be helpful to take a look at some of the things you might want to consider when looking to work with a creative design studio.
1. The Ginger Agency With a motto like ‘Work Hard, Be Nice’, this full-service digital marketing agency believes that happy employees produce better work resulting in happy clients and ultimately a better business. With studios in Fredericton and Saint John, NB this growing agency has produced digital advertising campaigns for notable clients such as the Harvest Jazz Festival and The NB Business Council. And, with just over 10 years in the business, The Ginger Agency recently joined The Canadian Agency Network (tCAN), Canada’s oldest and most extensive network of independent advertising, marketing and communication agencies. Why does this matter? Because we think being part of a team that values learning and sharing creative ideas with other leading designers from across Canada, fosters growth as a designer. We should also mention the company donates 5% of their time and profits to community non-profit agencies.
2. The Details is another full-service creative agency located in Fredericton, NB that made our top picks list. Whether working with small businesses or large-scale government campaigns, this marketing and design studio prides itself on providing clients with the intimacy of a small agency but with all the knowledge and expertise of a larger studio. With only four employees it has handled design campaigns for Graystone Brewing, Theatre NB and St. Thomas University. From packaging and branding to print and web design, this agency does it all. But what really stood out to us, is how much they value client collaboration at every step of the process.

3. If out-of-the-box illustration and colourful animation is your style, then we choose Wonderlust as another top pick. Located in Halifax, NS this design and animation studio has a passion for quirky, colourful story-telling through 2D and 3D animation and motion graphics. Wonderlust studios have created tv commercials, information videos and animated short films. While a relatively small in-house team, they also work with a rich network of other artists and animators to create and produce many of their projects. So, if you think you’ve got the skills and perhaps looking to freelance, a studio like Wanderlust may be what you’re looking for.
4. If you prefer the fast-paced atmosphere of a larger creative studio that still maintains small-town values, then VERB could be the place for you. This Halifax-based creative agency works with some of the biggest names in the travel industry producing social media campaigns, websites and apps. While their mantra is “Doing the impossible, daily”, VERB made our list because of its commitment to improving staff wellness and a workplace culture that far exceeds the norm. Staff perks like working remotely, free snacks, and health benefits are just a few.

5. Rounding out our top five is IKAR Digital, located in Saint John, NB. Merging their design knowledge and expertise with professionals in architecture, real estate, construction and urban planning; IKAR Digital helps companies utilize 3D technology to enhance their design and marketing needs. With the anticipated growth in demand for 3D Rendering services, this design studio is positioning itself as a leader in the industry here in Atlantic Canada which is why we think it deserves a spot on our list of top five design studios to work with after graduation.
